Location Spotlight: Mysterious Galaxy!

If you are a local, book-loving San Diegan, like those of us here at The Underground Treehouse, then there is one place you cannot fail to visit: Mysterious Galaxy.  Their tagline, “Books of Martians, Murder, Magic and Mayhem,” captures the fun atmosphere you will encounter from the moment you step through the door. The San Diego Mysterious Galaxy independent bookstore is a great local source of books and book signings. Though they do not solely host book signings for young adult authors, they are the place to stalk if you are waiting to meet your favorite Y.A. writers. They have hosted acclaimed Y.A. writers such as Cassandra Clare, Holly Black, Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl and others.

As an independent bookstore, Mysterious Galaxy has not only the books you’re looking for, but also the environment you crave. Going in, you will notice that they have a huge Y.A. book section. Quite frankly, it is to die for. Their store is the kind that invites you to get comfortable and allows you to satisfy your bookish needs. If you require book-centered conversation, the people there are kind, knowledgeable, and more than willing to talk books with you. If you are looking for signed books, they have a wonderful collection of already signed books ready for purchase. If you desire caffeine, there is a Starbucks right next door, but that hardly seems relevant.

Mysterious Galaxy is an important and involved member of the community. They work to promote love of books, bring together book-lovers and wonderful book-writers, and provide readers with great books and customer service. They partner with local non-profit organizations and, as they express in their website, they have “an active young adult program, providing authors to visit, read, and teach at schools that partner with [them].” We fans of the Y.A. genre are always looking for ways to connect with the authors we love, and Mysterious Galaxy is always eager to help us do so. Whenever there is a Y.A. bookish event you are sureYA in the Sun to find them. One of the main events to look forward to this November is “YA in the Sun,” and of course, Mysterious Galaxy will be the onsite bookseller. This event (free entry), which is to take place on November 10th, promises to have signings, raffles, activities, and pure unadulterated fun. (Click here for more information!)

I invite you to join me in stalking this great local source of sustenance for your Y.A. book obsession. A great way to do so is to sign up for their newsletter. I also urge you to keep an eye on their second site in Redondo Beach since they too host wonderful events with Y.A. authors—and for you coffee addicts, it has the Catalina Coffee Cafe in its building! Thankfully, it is a relatively short distance from San Diego. Trust me, if one of your favorite authors will be holding a signing, the two hour trip will probably seem more than worth it. Book-lovers like nothing more than to be surrounded by books and fellow book-loving people, and Mysterious Galaxy provides all that plus opportunities to meet amazing authors. We San Diegans are lucky to have such a wonderful source of bookish delights.

Note: Don’t forget about “YA in the Sun!” If you are a fan of the young adult genre, this is one event you cannot miss! Just click the link and take a look at the authors attending!
